Malcolm had never seen such an interesting and oddly shaped drum in his life. As a percussionist for the local high school band, he figured he was the sole percussion authority of the land. So he found it extremely irritating, and very puzzling when his high school band teacher brought to him this supposedly drum called the doumbek. When he inquired as to the doumbek’s origins, his teacher calmly replied that it was found in many Middle Eastern songs and cultural dances. At first, Malcolm was aggravated, but his curiosity soon took over, and he went to work on the little drum to figure out how best to use it in his music.
