Internet protocol & firewalls

February 28th, 2008 . by admin

In today’s virtual world of internet firewalls are very common. For greater security of the network, firewalls allow or deny access to their private network based on the individual IP address of the client using the network. If the client is using a proxy server or NAT, blocking the IP address of any one of the client may result in blocking many individual people.IP addresses can be shared by multiple clients either due to there partition in the shared hosting web server environment. A common practice is to have a network address translator (NAT) hide a large number of IP addresses in a private network. In small home network, all the functions of the NAT are usually carried out by residential gateway device called router. Here all the computers connected to the router will bear a private IP address and the router will bear a public/common IP address to communicate with the virtual world of internet. hence this allows to share several computers with one public IP address.
